After the success of 2008′s Linnet, we decided it was time to make a second album with the musicians that made up The Colleen Raney Band at the time. Hanz Araki, Casey Neill, and Zak Borden had been playing and touring with me for a couple of years and we had a fair amount of material that we were excited to put onto an album. Hanz, who had produced the first record, came on board as a producer again and we moved the majority of recording up to Seattle to work with Garey Shelton. Additional recording was done in Portland at The Secret Society, with the inimitable Jordan Leff at the controls.
In addition to the three gents, we also had the pleasure of working again with Matt Jerrell (drums and percussion), Ezra Holbrook (bass), Eddie Parente (fiddle), Mark Raney (vocals), and Matthew Hayward-Macdonald (guitar). We also introduced Colm MacCárthaigh (guitar, cittern) to the fray, and were joined by Patrick Raney and Erin Raney for a some lovely backing vocals.
We tracked all of it in 5 days, took a day to edit and fix a few things, mixed over 5 days, and mastered for 1 day – all over the span of 3 weeks. I’ll admit it was breakneck, and I know that Hanz would have preferred to take a little bit more time, but we had a deadline and I was determined to keep it.
I love this little record. I love being in the studio and this was no exception. I think I’ll always be able to hear things that I’d like to change – especially after a couple of years of listening to it – but I am proud of the work we did on it.
